For Christians, Papacy was set up in 539 and began the 1260 years of the dark ages ending in 1799. God used Napoleon to end the Papacy's reign at which time Bible studies began to flourish and the world began to be enlightened as they came out of the Dark Ages.

Two key events were the Repeal of the test and Corporation Acts in 1828 and Catholic Emancipation in 1829 These reforms:
Broke the old Anglican‑dominated religious order.
Empowered Dissenters—many of whom were already revival‑minded and prophecy‑focused.
Heightened Protestant–Catholic tensions, which many interpreted through Daniel and Revelation.
Created the social and legal environment in which Adventist, premillennial, and restorationist movements could flourish in the 1830s–1840s.

13And I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs coming out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. 14These are demonic spirits that perform signs and go out to all the kings of the earth, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 10 years they prepared for war from 1904 to 1914.
15“Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who remains awake and clothed, so that he will not go naked and let his shame be exposed.”
16And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Especially when seeing what happened to the Jewish people during WW2. And unable to comprehend the events, many believed God was indifferent and stopped identifying themselves as Christian. Hence the burning of the tares (ceasing to call themselves Christian). Many who called themselves Christian but retained the mark of the beast, fulfill the Song of Solomon 5:2 & 3 as they do have some redeeming value when they support the Jewish people's return to their homeland Israel. As stated in Song 5:8-16.
